Christian Michael Stearle!

He's arrived!!  Ryan and I feel so blessed to finally say that!  As Ryan wrote last week, Christian was born - very quickly - on Thursday, March 21st.  He came out screaming and red and absolutely perfect.  When he arrived, they gave me a drug to relax me - I have no idea what it was called, but they put it into my IV right after he was born, and it instantly made the room spin.  I was drugged... and I mean, like floating-on-a-cloud kind of drugged...  I think the doc felt sorry for me for having endured a very painful labor... but it knocked me out!  I was awake, aware of my surroundings, but unable to move my arms, legs, or hold my eyes open.  I was shaking... It was awful.  I couldn't even see my baby or hold him because of this drug... So after about an hour, I asked the nurse to fix it... I told her I want to hold my baby!  So she came back with an "antidote" of sorts - A reversal.  Within minutes, I had my baby boy in my arms!  That was a happy moment for me!  :)  Since he was born at 1041p, we weren't able to go home at the 24 hr mark like we wanted to, but we left early Saturday morning.  My mom kept the boys the whole time we were gone and on Saturday and Sunday.  It gave Ryan and I some time to rest and relax at home with our new baby boy.  Little did we know, it was the last and only time we'd be home with our sweet Hobbes kitty too.

At the hospital, we were visited by our favorite resident doctor - Dr. Tyse.  He came by several times while we were there to check on us... and he stayed and chatted with us once.  He told us all about his residency and his wife is a 4th yr resident in Massachusetts and will be moving down here to work at Mercy this summer.  He was just the nicest doctor!  It was a cool story that he delivered Christian.  Ryan says right before I started to push, he gave Ryan a thumbs up and said "baby time!"  That's the only words he spoke the whole time I was in labor... I think he was a bit nervous.  :)  Anyway, I sure hope we get to run into him again someday... He's a hero in my book!

When my mom brought the boys to see us in the hospital, they were really excited to get their gifts from baby Christian.  I don't know how interested in him they were, but they knew he was coming with gifts... (Rocky the train and a Tag Reader book for Ethan and a Super Hero Squad DVD and a Leap Pad game for Jackson.).
We have really fallen in love with our new little guy.  I know I'm really behind on my blog... I promise to update as much as I can!  I had no idea how much work it is to have 3 kids, under the age of 5... but I'm quickly learning that my time is not my own right now.  I'll update more on that later... For now, he's a sweet pic of what baby C does best... zzzzz.......

Hello Sunshine, We've Missed You!

There haven't been many sunshine days in March, but last weekend, we had 2 beautiful - gorgeous - days and last Friday, the boys and I spent 2 hours in the AM and about 5 hours in the PM playing outside... It was almost 80 degrees!  It was fantastic.. I got a sunburn - obviously not considering how easily I would burn, even though I reapplied the boys twice to make sure they wouldn't.  It was a lot of fun to watch my wild boys get to run and play freely... We've been caged up in our house so much this winter- this was a welcome change!  As mentioned before, Ethan figured out how to make Jackson truck move, and I have dreaded that day... but he was so proud of himself, that it actually wasn't so bad... Minus the times he backed the truck up into Jackson, the garage door and the motorcycle... Other than that, it was pretty fun to watch him so happy with himself.  I feel pretty blessed to be given the privilege of having not just one, or two, but THREE boys to watch grow up!
They are such an incredible joy to me!!!

Once, Twice, Three Times a Mama...

They say that life happens fast.  Anyone who challenges that statement need look no further than the story of how Christian Michael Stearle burst on to the scene...

If I'm telling the whole story, then I should go back to Wednesday night (the 20th) where it all started...

Keisha had been experiencing contractions all day long for the past several days, but they were not very consistent nor were they very powerful - more annoying than anything else.  On Wednesday night that began to change.  Although the contractions were not very strong, they became very consistent.  We took this as a signal to get the party started!!  Keisha had gone out of her way to plan all of the events that had to take place prior to us hitting the highway hospital bound.  While she called her mother (to come watch the boys) I loaded the truck with cameras, purses, pillows, diaper bags, car seats, etc.  Then we waited.  Mimi arrived, and we waited more.  Around 11pm we all decided to go to bed, and we waited more.  When Thursday morning came around, Keisha and I looked around our bedroom and came to the realization that there was no baby there yet.  False alarm!

Now on to Thursday.  Keisha was experiencing the same annoying contractions all day long again, and I think she was starting to get discouraged about the thought of potentially having to put up with them for another full week (her due date was March 29th).  For the record, I can't say that I blame her.  I have said many times that I do not envy one single aspect of what women go through during a pregnancy, and I hold firm to that opinion!  However as a guy, at least in my experience, pregnancy creates a very helpless feeling because there is often little that I can do to help ease her discomfort.  We had made note of the contractions, but nothing seemed to be different from the night before.  My truck was still about 75% loaded with all of the goodies that we would be taking to the hospital, so in my mind we were still ready to roll at a moment's notice.  I was planning on waking up at 4:45am on Friday morning to work out, so around 8:30pm I was looking to hit the sack.  I no sooner got in bed and closed my eyes when I heard steady, rapid breathing to my right.  The time was 8:30pm, and Keisha was finally having her first REAL contraction - the kind that she wasn't even able to talk through.  Knowing what that meant, we started the clock.  About 7 minutes later came another one.  About 8 minutes after that another.  At the end of the fourth contraction just before 9:00pm, Keisha texted her mom and told her to get ready.  My phone rang almost immediately and it was Mimi on the other line - "Do I need to head over there again??!?" she said.  "Probably a good idea" I told her, after letting her know that she had plenty of time to take a quick shower before heading towards our house...  After all, Keisha's contractions were still 7-8 minutes apart.  About 3 minutes later I was back on the phone with Mimi telling her to skip the shower!!

I loaded the rest of the bags in my truck and we hit the road Southbound to Johnson around 9:30pm.  Keisha's contractions were getting increasingly intense at this point and were coming about 5 minutes apart.  We navigated our way South on I-540 through the wind and rain and pulled into the seemingly deserted Willow Creek parking lot.  After parking the truck, we made the agonizing, contraction-laden walk into the ER entrance.  Time of arrival - 9:45pm.

Now both Keisha and Dr. Gorman had prepared me for this moment, and I still have visions of July 26, 2010 dancing through my head (the night Ethan was born).  As we walked in the door I made eye contact with the nurses on duty behind the glass and said "It's baby time!" while pointing vigorously to Keisha's midsection.  As we rounded the corner to enter the triage area, I immediately blurted out "she delivers babies extremely fast, and she wants an epidural so please start all the necessary blood work immediately."  If looks from a nurse could kill you would all be reading my obituary right now.  "Let's not get ahead of ourselves" she said.  "First we need to get her on a bed to see if she's really in labor..." as Keisha is doubling over every 3 minutes in a heap of tears and hyperventilation.  In a bed in the triage unit of the Willow Creek ER - 9:50pm.

The nurse discovered that Keisha was dilated at 5cm and began hooking up all of the baby heart rate sensors.  While I was hammering through paperwork, Keisha's contractions had basically turned into one prolonged event with very few (if any) distinguishable breaks.  I got the feeling that the nurses were moving with a slight sense of urgency, but could clearly tell that they were all under the impression that we had more time here that we really did.  Nurse disappears.  Shows back up with paperwork - a couple minutes gone.  Shows up again to check her dilation - still 5cm - more time gone.  Another nurse shows up to take bloodwork - 5 more minutes gone.  Then Keisha's water breaks!  I rush to tell the nurse who had stepped away and she returns to discover that she is now dilated to 8cm.  CRAP!  NO TIME!  GOTTA GET TO A ROOM!  Gathering clothes, bundling up wires, wheels up on the bed and heading to a room - 10:20pm.

Once in the room, things really started moving fast.  It was Ethan's delivery all over again!  We wheeled Keish next to her delivery bed and helped her make the trek to the other side between contractions.  Nurses were flying all around the room getting equipment and materials ready for our little guy.  The one thing the room was missing - the doctor.  I heard our head nurse call for Dr. Seale at least six times, each page going out with increasing urgency.  "Dr. Seale to room 21 for delivery."  "Someone go find Dr. Seale and get her here for delivery!"  "Page Dr. Seale now to room 21 for delivery!"  But alas, no Dr. Seale.  Our head nurse, Christine, checked Keisha one more time and said "good news, bad news:  you're about to have that baby, but you have no time for an epidural."

Keisha had already arrived at this conclusion in her head when we darkened the doors of the ER, so she digested this news in a very stoic manner.  Our nurse also wasn't going to let the lack of a doctor in the room stop us from getting this baby out either - insert Dr. Thys.  Dr. Thys is a first year resident who has just recently started his program in Northwest Arkansas.  He has assisted in the delivery of approximately 50 babies, but he has never been captain of the ship - until Thursday night!  "Dr. Thys, we need you to deliver," said Christine, so Dr. Thys began to suit up.  While he was gearing up the nurse was taking Keisha through her final takeoff checklist:  Circuit breakers in - check.  Power to 30% - check.  Flaps to takeoff - check.  The actual checklist sounded much more medical than that, but this is basically all I heard.  After another painful contraction, Keisha blurted out that she needed to push and the nurse agreed.  "Dr. Thys, you need to get over here NOW!" she commanded.  Dr. Thys assumed the position, then after a brief break in Keisha's contractions, Christian Michael emerged after one very long, very hard push!  Time of birth - 10:41pm.

Christian Michael Stearle was born on Thursday night, March 21st clocking in at 7lbs. 7oz and measuring 20in. long.  10 fingers, 10 toes, 1 healthy set of lungs!  After cutting the cord I went into my usual post-birth routine which involves sobbing over our new baby boy as the nurses get him all cleaned up and checked out.  About 5 minutes after Christian was born, Dr. Seale showed up!  Where was she you ask?  Wendy's of course!!  Having not even stopped all night long to eat, Dr. Seale did something she never does - stepped out of the hospital and drove a very short distance down the road to grab a quick sandwich.  When she left, all she was told was that there was some lady who was only dilated to 5cm in triage.  Little did she know that Keisha is the baby delivering equivalent of Speed Racer!  It seemed fitting that on this cold, windy evening amid the rain and sleet that the one thing that kept our doctor from delivering our baby was a Frosty!  Everything with the delivery went perfectly fine (although I'm sure Keisha would argue that "perfectly fine" would have included some intense waist-down numbing agent), and I was once again impressed with the professionalism and skill of the Willow Creek nursing staff.  Everyone was great, and we even got to help our favorite resident physician log his first solo delivery in the process!!

As I type this last paragraph, we are approximately 3 hours from checking out and taking our new baby home.  Keisha and I have laughed several times today about how far we've come in this crazy game we call parenting.  When Jackson was born, her and I just assumed we'd live at the hospital where people were there to help with everything!  "How can they let us leave here?  We don't know what to do with this thing when we get home!?"  Now 5 years and 2 more kids later we're doing everything we can to just stick out the mandatory 24 hour waiting period before we're cleared to leave.

Once again I find myself in awe.  In awe of a God who created life and decided to bless me over and over with happy healthy little ones.  In awe of my wife who once again rose to the challenge of carrying our child and absolutely knocked it out of the park.  In awe of my responsibility to raise this perfect, innocent little baby boy in a way that will hopefully make the world a better place.

I honestly love my life.

We got wheels.

These two.... oh my.

This is BEFORE Ethan learned to drive Jackson's truck (uh-oh).

Digging for Worms.

Who knew worms were so much fun?  We walked over to Ben's house the other day and the boys decided to dig for worms.  What fun!  I just LOVE having boys!!

Kitty Haircut

So Ryan must be feeling extra sorry for me and my level of uncomfortable - or possibly that he is tired of me "hating" the cats (which I do not, by the way) but he gave me the green light to get them shaved.  It's been a topic of much hostility in our past because I've asked for this before with MUCH MUCH MUUUUUCH opposition.  Ryan loves these cats... like, a LOT.  So he said it's terrible, horrible, cruel thing to do to them.... But without me really asking it, he said he was ok with it!  I wonder if it could be that I wasn't letting them on the bed?  Anyway - before I get a whole bunch of people and their unwanted disapproving opinions (seriously, I don't want them), our cats are Maine Coons.  They are gorgeous and have very very long hair.... It sheds more than you could ever imagine.  I had trouble with this fact when Jackson was a baby, Ethan was a baby and I knew - it would happen all over again... Think: baby bottle with tiny bits of cat hair circling the nipples.  It's THAT bad... Nevermind that you can never wear black in our house and that we should own stock in lint rollers.  Anyway, Ryan only had to green light me once and I made the appointment for last Thursday!  They were in at 900am and out by 300p.  They didn't have a great experience... Apparently, these litter-mate 11yr old brothers became very hostile with each other afterward and had to be separated.  Days later, Calvin was still hissing at Hobbes... Vet called and said it's because Calvin doesn't recognize him!  Ugh.  Hobbes was shaking so bad for the first few days... Vet said he's "cold."  oh geez.  Then, in the last few days, Calvin has developed a constant "sneeze" - which can be caused from the fact that he got vaccines when he was at the vet or it could be a sign of a kitty-type flu virus.  Anyway, I'm sure Ryan won't agree to let me do this again, but for now, I've loved on those cats without any fear of cat hair covering my shirt... It's really nice.  And it only takes 4 mos for it grow back.  I wouldn't hesitate in a million years to do this again if Ryan would let me... It's so nice and they haven't had a single hairball (they were having at least one a day!).  The boys are loving how snuggly the cats are since they got their "haircut."  I love that I haven't had to buy a lint roller in a whole week.

38 1/2 wks Doc Visit

Warning:  the following blog entry is a whole bunch of whining and feeling-sorry-for-myself crap, so if you don't want to read, I totally understand.  I just needed to vent.

Today was my 38.5 wk doc appointment.  I was very hopeful for some good news - much, much progression.  Sadly, doc says I'm at 2.5 cm, still 70% effaced, and baby has dropped to -2 station.  Not exactly the good news I was hoping for... but I'm trying not to get too emotional about it.  I know it's easy to forget this feeling - I'm guilty of it in the past - but these last few weeks are absolute torture.  Before I got pregnant this time, I said this to more people than I can count "You're so close now!  You're at the finish line... Hang on and wait for baby to determine his own birthday."  I know people roll their eyes - and I really do believe in that stuff... I had just forgotten how hard it is these last few weeks.  I am not a fan of induction, and don't plan on having it done again.  I loved Ethan's labor/birth experience, and I want that again... but selfishly, I want it NOW!  I am so enormous that I can't even get a deep breath.  It feels like this baby boy's legs are crammed up in my throat and every SINGLE time I stand up, I have to practically run to the bathroom cuz he's pressing so hard on my bladder.  I am just over this!  I am anxious to meet my little sweet bundle, and boo hoo hoo - I want to do it now!!!  I don't want to wait anymore!  So I fought back the tears when doc said "I still think you'll be pregnant next Monday."  I had to fight hard, but I knew if I started crying, it would be really hard to stop.  So I didn't talk about it and waited til I could collect myself.  Ryan has been very sweet and said "well, you never know."  And it's true, and sweet, but not likely.  My boys didn't come til they were due, so what was I thinking that this one would come early?  I was just hopeful.  Too hopeful.  And I know it's close... I know it's soooo close.  But it's not today, and I'm sad about that.  Every day feels like a year.  So I'm counting down the decade begin now...

Jackson's latest drawing.

I quite love it.  After drawing it, he noted to me that my hair makes me as tall as daddy (very cool) and that the baby is sleeping in the crib and out of my belly (even cooler if you ask me.).  I love that the door is smaller than we are and the mailbox has mail in it.  And Jackson is almost as tall as Ryan.  Oh, and I love how skinny I am.  HA!  This pic may be on our fridge for years.  :)

Zonk!

This is totally not a big deal to MOST moms.  I realize that.  But my kids - they are sweet little Babywise-raised children who never EVER fall asleep anywhere except their beds... until recently!  First Jackson did it a few times on the couch - when he wasn't feeling well.  Then, Ethan has done it a few times, also on the couch - when not feeling that great.  However, on Sunday - the boys were upstairs in their little couches watching Cars 2 while Ryan and I were finishing the nursery (letters are up! yay!), and I noticed an unusual quiet coming from up there.  I went up there to find Jackson watching intently (not uncommon anytime the TV is on) and Ethan sound asleep!  It was only 1130am - so I couldn't believe it!  Granted, he's had some tummy issues for about a week now, but mostly he wasn't sick or anything - just tired!  I was actually excited to see this!  I'd like my boys to feel comfortable just going to sleep wherever they are tired, but I just didn't think that was in the cards for us this young.  How cute is he!?  <Ignore the messy playroom!>  He slept about 1.5 hrs like this!

37 1/2 Week Doc Appt

Went to the doc today for my 37 week checkup.  Not a lot of change - I went from a 1.5cm dilated to "a little more than a 2."  So doc said he is pretty confident that I'll be pregnant next week, but "not too long after that."  So who knows what that means, but it was music to my ears.  I have just a few things I wanted to have done in the next week... My brother is going to detail my Honda (it's BAAAAAAD!) on Wednesday, I have a pedicure scheduled for Thursday and on Monday, my dear sweet husband is allowing me ONE deep housecleaning from our old housekeeper.... So I'm going to be set after that... My mom is really rooting for the baby to come next week since it's Spring Break, and it will be easier on her not having to deal with the boys' school.... But I'm good with any day that is soon!  I have my next appointment on Monday - 38 weeks!  Almost there now!!

Donuts with Dad!

On Thursday, Ryan went to work a bit late and took Jackson to school for Donuts with Dad at Jackson's school.  Jackson just loves spending ANY and ALL time with daddy.... and as you can see, Ethan was feeling the same way!  Our boys sure do adore their daddy...

Blog Book Finished...

From 2010, that is.  Yep, I'm that far behind!  These books take me FOREVER to finish... I only work on them once in a while - like when Ryan and I are watching a movie - I'll work it then, or something like that... so naturally, it takes forever.  Plus, I did my 2008 book in 2011 - that was my first one.   So now I have 2008-2010 done.  I felt so happy to get this one done because it was on my before-baby-to-do-list.  It's 186 pages and 100% customized.  I adjust each and every blog entry so be formatted on the page like I want it to.  I can change the font, color, picture size, text size, etc.... so I go thru each page and format it the way I want - that's why it takes so long.  But it's worth it.  No reason to have this blog and this amazing archive of our lives if I don't publish it somehow.  I guess I'll start on 2011's book after baby....

37 Weeks, FULL TERM! YAY!!

  • Baby's Sex: BOY!! (Name to be announced at birth!)
  • Baby is as big as: Watermelon (19 - 22 in, 6.5 lbs)
  • Cravings this week: Coffee, sweet tea, grilled cheese sandwiches.
  • What's different this week than last week: Sleeping is officially a problem.  I toss and turn all night long because of my hip pain - laying on my back is what caused the dizzy spells and when I do that, I can't get a deep breath.  So I guess this is God's way of getting moms prepared before baby comes for the late night feedings, etc.  I know one thing - I'll take the late night feedings over this!!
  • Weeks to go:  3 weeks
  • Next Appt: Monday, March 11th
  • Big Brothers: Ethan has decided he doesn't want baby to come out.  When I ask him, he says NO!  He doesn't totally understand all this but I'm starting to get a little nervous about how he's going to handle not being able to climb all over me when I'm holding the baby.... He tends to want to be glued to my side when he or I are on the couch... so it should be interesting.  I want to try to balance both kids... I don't want him to feel like he is being replaced or anything - so I have to figure out a way to balance it.  I know one thing - this baby is going have to be a "go-with-the-flow" kind of kid!  My boys don't know how to be quiet and they are so wild... Hopefully, baby boy doesn't mind.  :)
  • Notes:  Hospital bag is packed, mom has done the 'rounds' with me as far as picking up kids, etc - so we are officially ready to go!
As of Friday, Ryan and I got the stomach bug - probably from Ethan - and it was BAD.  Needless to say, there is no picture for this week... I wasn't feeling too photogenic.

Ethan and Lily

Every night at dinner, Ryan asks each of us who we'd like to pray for before we eat dinner.  Ethan's is always the same - he always wants to pray for Lily.  He just loves this girl so much!  I think she has a bit of a love/hate relationship with him... but once she gets warmed up, they play SO well together - it's really cute!  She's only about 2 mos younger than him, so they are super close in age.   I was trying to get a pic of the two of them - while Ethan was antagonizing her acting like he was going to steal her swing... (he loves when she screams at him) so at first she wasn't in the mood for a picture.
They crack me up!

36 Wk Check Up!

I went in yesterday for my 36 wk "REAL" checkup from the doc.  I was oddly very nervous but had pretty much determined not to expect to hear any news since I had not progressed at my 36 wk with either of my past two pregnancies.... but low-and-behold - Doc said I'm 1.5cm dilated and 70% effaced!!!  I was totally shocked!  Now, I'm not ignorant - I know that technically, this doesn't mean that I'll deliver early but it definitely gave me some much needed hope.  My level of discomfort at this point has been insane.  I know I'm "supposed" to "enjoy" this pregnancy and "not rush it" and blah blah....I just don't.  I am ready for this precious baby to come out!!!!!!!  So now, if the weather will just cooperate, I'm going to walk my booty off to get him out! Friday is officially full term!  YAY!!!!
